No fun to hang around/freaked out for another day

Talking to SG’s friend outside of a bar Saturday night. It’s her first time visiting Albany and we are out for the night. She can’t help but note the particularly pungent smell of the watering hole we happen to be patronizing. “Can you smell that in there?” she wants to know, wrinkling her nose. “It smells like lavender and old people and grim death itself.” We have a good laugh at this. Scent, NPR has recently related to me, is strongly associated with memory, and I chide her that her olfactory association with Albany will be forever associated with sordidness and a putrid smell. And so there you have it, Albany, New York: grim death itself.

I think they should use that in tourism ads for Albany. Albany it smells like lavender and old people and grim death itself. It probably wouldn't excite too many people with the possible exception of goths. The only one I can think of that might have a realistic chance of working would be "Albany it's not New York City but the bars are open til' 4". It's not perfect but at least it doesn't raise expectations too high.

haha. i love how you can deduct what establishment i was hanging out at based on smell. when you come back to town, i'll blindfold you and lead you around, having you guess at where you are based on the aroma of that particular place. right answers get rewarded alcohol. we'll probably look ridiculous, but that never stopped us before.
